I am almost back from the dead. That's what it feels like when I'm writing a book. I barely even read the news.

However, I will return sometime next week, and as you can see my blog has a new look. I'm working on that as well, so bear with me if it changes a bit. Not sure whether it'll stay this way when the book comes out or not (in March), but I'm giving it a go for now. It will soon change to www.suzannevenker.com from www.nobullmom.blogspot.com. However, if you google No Bull Mom in the future, you'll still be directed here.

Hope you all haven't ditched me entirely.

Temporary Absence

I'll be back in August -- thanks for your patience.

Conservatives Outnumber Liberals in 2010

New Book Scheduled for Release March 15, 2011

I'm thrilled to announce that I've signed a contract with the awesome folks at WND Books. He spoke to the U.S. Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Obama."
The Marine looked at the man and said, "Sir, Mr. Obama is no longer president and no longer resides here."

The old man said, "Okay", and walked away. The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Obama."

The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Obama is no longer president and no longer resides here."

The man thanked him and, again, just walked away.

The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very same U.S. Marine, saying "I would like to go in and meet with President Obama."

The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Obama. I've told you already that Mr. Obama is no longer the president and no longer resides here. Don't you understand?"

The old man looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it."

The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow, Sir."

<img We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way. Here is a model separation agreement:

The two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass, each taking a similar portion. Our representatives can divide other assets since both sides have such distinct tastes.

We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. We'll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and you can go with wind, solar and biodiesel. You can have your beloved lifelong welfare dwellers, food stamps, homeless, homeboys, hippies, druggies, and illegal aliens. We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEOs, and rednecks. We'll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood .

You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our way of life is under assault, we'll help provide them security.

We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, political correctness, and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U.N., but we will no longer be paying the bill.

We'll keep the SUV's, pickup trucks, and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.

You can give everyone health care if you can find any practicing doctors. The good news is that I've just sold my second book to WND Books, which is part and parcel of the popular news site World Net Daily. The working title for my new book is What Conservative Women Know: A Commonsense Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Balance. It will hit the shelves March 2011.

The bad news is that I won't be blogging daily for the next few months. Once my manuscript is complete (July), however, I will return to blogging until the book is released. In the meantime, I will be posting at least one article a week for Newsreal, so if you continue to check in weekly I will make sure to have a link to these articles here.

I will be updating my my other site soon --Suzanne Venker Dot Com -- and in March 2011 this site will become my main focus. That's where you'll be able to find out everything about The Book.

Thanks to all of you who check in faithfully...and even those of you who wind up here accidentally and may hate everything I stand for.

An obese mother in the US is trying to put on weight in order to become the world's fattest woman.

Donna Simpson, from New Jersey, weighs 273kg but told the Daily Mail newspaper she had her heart set on reaching her goal weight of 1000lb (450kg) in two years.

The 42-year-old already holds the title of the world's fattest mother after giving birth to her daughter in 2007 when she weighed 241kg.

"I'd love to be 1000lb ... it might be hard though, running after my daughter keeps my weight down," Ms Simpson told the Daily Mail.

Ms Simpson, who needs a mobility scooter to go shopping, eats huge amounts of junk food each week and tries to move as little as possible so she doesn't burn off as many calories.

"I do love cakes and sweet things, doughnuts are my favourite," she said.

Ms Simpson said she also loved eating sushi and would often eat 70 big pieces in one go.

Her 49-year-old partner Philippe — who she met on a dating site for plus-size people — was encouraging her to reach her goal, she said.

"I think he'd like it if I was bigger ... he's a real belly man and completely supports me," she said.

To put on enough weight, Ms Simpson will need to eat 12,000 calories a day, which is six times the recommended daily intake for women.

In order to pay for the enormous amounts of food she is eating — her weekly grocery bill is $815 — Ms Simpson makes money by running a website where men pay to watch her consume fast food.
There are currently 78 million baby boomers in America, and they're the "largest, richest generation in history." They control 3/4 of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, the White House, and Congress.

Indeed, and that's what's wrong with America.

The baby boomer generation is responsible for so many of society's ills it's hard to know where to start. Not only are they largely responsible for the economic mess we're in (which was the focus of Brokaw's documentary), their outlook on life can be characterized by one word: whiny. The following statement in yesterday's Politico is a perfect example: "House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is not accustomed to the word she’s been hearing far more frequently in recent days: “no."

Author P.J. O'Rourke was the most honest baby boomer Brokaw interviewed. In Boomers$! he says, "We were stoned all the time, the sexuality was utterly irresponsible, utterly irreligious. We had no respect for any kind of authority -- we just left a trail of wreckage behind us."

Indeed they did, and part of this wreckage includes parenting -- as evident by O'Rourke's most telling phrase: "We had no respect for authority." This lack of respect did not end with the Woodstock years; it seeped into society to such a degree that it's become evident everywhere we turn: in businesses, schools -- and where it matters most: at home.

To be fair, the baby boomers' hearts were in the right place. They wanted to replace the old-fashioned parenting approach of "You'll do it because I said so," with a softer approach. The problem is that they threw out the baby with the bath water. For in their desire to be more understanding -- and do away with shaming and smacking (a good thing, to be sure) -- they blurred the line between adult and child, and the results have been disastrous.

Their biggest mistake was in trying to be their children's friends instead of their parents. Baby boomers don't like to moralize, so they don't moralize to their children. Instead they just tell their children to "do what they believe is right" without offering any kind of moral framework. Baby boomers also don't like to be told what to do, so they don't tell their children what to do -- which results in children having more leeway than they know what to do with. The natural outcome is that the kids rule the roost.

In short, we've witnessed a generation of children raising children. That's why defensive parenting exists -- because every parent knows, deep down, when he's lost control at home. But as I said in my earlier post, we shouldn't blame individual parents as much as society as a whole -- for it is society that has fostered the baby boomer mentality. Remember: Baby boomers control 3/4 of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, the White House, and Congress.

I have great hope for the next generation. I've seen many parents who were raised by baby boomers who have become more old-fashioned in their parenting. This is a good thing. For while boomers got some things right -- in helping to tackle racism, for example -- they did not get the parenting thing right.

That's unfortunate -- but a good lesson has been learned. And anyone who picks up a copy of Reb Bradley's Born Liberal, Raised Right -- and takes it to heart -- can be part of the solution.

Note: The above analysis is a generalization. It doesn't mean that every single parent who hails from the baby boomer generation screwed up -- but this doesn't change the fact that the generation as whole steered America in the wrong direction.

The Future of Sarah Palin

I like and agree with this post and thought you'd enjoy it.

I'll Be Back Tomorrow with Defensive Parenting Part 3

I apologize...MAJOR computer problems all day yesterday.

Obama In St. Louis Today

For those who may be interested:

The White House announced Saturday that President Barack Obama has chosen St. Charles High School as the backdrop for his speech next Wednesday on health care. From the pressure to breastfeed and stimulate your baby intellectually (an absurd concept), to not allowing our children to play freely in the neighborhood, to the idea that parents should have 100K dollars saved for their kids' college educations, the entire parenting environment can really suck. Now add to this the politically correct, unspoken idea that being a meanie will cause your child irreparable harm -- and it's little wonder parents today struggle so much.

This is why it's so important for people to speak out against modern parenting. We need to get the pressure off parents who feel overwhelmed with their responsibilities -- and part of the way to do this is to quit setting them up to fail. The above scenario sets them up to fail in the same way the pressure of becoming a working mother does. Thankfully, the pressure with this particular issue has eased up a bit over the past decade; but ten years ago it was still in full swing. That's why I wrote a book to counteract the notion that women should expect to successfully care for babies and toddlers while holding down a full-time job. The concept is absurd; there just aren't enough hours in the day to perform two full-time jobs well.

Similarly, teaching parents to indulge their children out of fear of coming across as a meanie is a lose-lose scenario. There is a happy medium between the belts and paddles of yesteryear and the indulgent nature of modern parenting. That middle ground is tough love, which means being firm, fair, consistent, and commanding -- while at the same time providing unconditional love. That we know this works doesn't mean we're successful all the time or that we won't struggle. We all struggle. But this doesn't change the fact that this is what children respond to best. And there is still plenty of room under this umbrella for us all to be unique in our parenting style -- and for us to take into account our children's unique personalities.

For example, I have one child who's naturally compliant. It is in her nature to do the right thing at all times. And let's face it: This makes raising her very easy. Now I have another child who's naturally defiant. It is in his nature to argue at all times, to do things his way, and to take charge. But his father and I don't change the rules for him because he's harder to raise. We don't "give him an out" by suggesting he can't help but get into trouble more because that's "just the way he is" or because he "needs to be understood" or because he's mentally deficient in some way. It just means it takes more effort on our part to raise him.

What has happened is that over the course of the past several decades the school of thought with respect to parenting has been that "nicer" is better. Parents have been encouraged to understand their children rather than "tell them what to do" -- the idea being that if children feel understood and appreciated, they'll behave better and will have a stronger sense of self. But more often than not this approach merely leads to children ruling the roost. Children don't want their parents to give them a lot of slack. They want you to be in charge of them.

For the past 20 years I have been up to my neck in disciplining children -- which is not say that I've done it perfectly all the time. But it is to say that I've seen a lot. I spent my twenties working with at-risk youth and teaching middle school; and as many of you I'm sure remember, middle school is all about discipline. Sometimes we teachers thought that's all we did all day!

Since that time I've been home with my two children, who are now 7 and 10. I know what today's parents are like, and I can tell you from everything I've seen that there are far fewer parents who parent the old-fashioned way than there are those who parent the modern way. And if it works for them, great. But most of the time it does not work. Most of the time these parents are suffering behind closed doors with children who are in control -- rather than the other way around. And if parents think this is hell when their kids are little, it ain't nothin compared to what it's going to be like when their kids are teenagers. All of us need to watch out for these years -- regardless of how we parent. So I say let's not add to it by starting things off on the wrong foot.

TOMORROW: Defensive Parenting, Part 3: How Did We Get Here?

Defensive Parenting, Part 1 -- What IS It?

My article in Newsreal last week about politically correct parenting prompted many comments, as well two subsequent articles --here and here -- along with my response to those articles.

The response to my article didn't surprise me, but it did remind me of the importance of a subject that lies dormant in our culture: defensive parenting. I say dormant because few people care to address this topic; talking parenting always gets people in trouble.

Take, for example, the awkward conversation David Forsmark (the writer of one of the above articles) and his wife had with another couple. The other couple mentioned the fact that too many unnecessary C-sections are being performed today -- and, as it happens, David's wife had two c-sections. According to David, his "wife’s lips got tighter and her eyes turned the color of those on the demon sheep in Carly Fiorentino’s silly political ad."

There are countless problems related to parenting about which people remain tight lipped, and the reason they do is precisely because of the scenario above: When you put yourself out there, you're going to risk offending someone. There's no way around it.

I understand people's reticence to speak up, but here's the thing: The politically correct environment in which we live has literally crippled our ability to solve social problems. Literally. David's wife's c-sections may or may not fall into the category of "genuinely necessary" -- none of us know. But the fact remains that their friends were correct in their assessment: There are far too many unnecessary c-sections performed today. It seems to me that if a person is certain he's done the right thing for the right reasons, there's no reason to get upset over someone pointing out a simple fact. Defensiveness only comes into play when a person has already felt as though he's done something he shouldn't. This is precisely what I ran into last week when I wrote about parenting.

Reb Bradley discusses this phenomenon in his excellent book, Born Liberal, Raised Right. There's even a chapter called "Defensive Parenting."

What do we know? We know that in the past 50 years, morality in America has declined exponentially; we know violent crime has tripled; we know there is now a casual disregard for life; we know student success is near an all-time low; and we know sexual activity outside of marriage has increased markedly -- resulting in STDs and unintended pregnancies. And at the same time all this has occurred, the stability of family relationships has plummeted. Forty percent of mothers today are single mothers (this is an astounding and disturbing social change), absentee parenting is par for the course, and being soft on discipline is politically correct. To say there's no connection between modern parenting and the issues listed above is to bury one's head in the sand.

The problem with solving these issues is this: If we concede that the decline in good parenting has harmed children -- and thus society -- then a certain segment of the population is going to feel guilty about being part of it, and today's Americans refuse to feel guilty about anything. Nothing is ever our fault. So what do we do? We sit around and pretend modern parenting is not the major social problem it is because the alternative means we'd have to judge some parents -- and that's the ultimate taboo in the 21st century.

So what does defensive parenting look like? Meet "Cheri," who got into a battle with some other commenters over my article last week. Cheri is a mother of six who sleeps with her children and took offense at some of things I said about discipline. (Her remarks then took on a life of their own, and Cheri went off on tangents totally unrelated to the point of my article.) Here's one of her many responses to another commenter:

"Sick bastards (referring to "Frank(ly) M'Dear"). Formula companies and crib companies LOVE parents like you."

Nice, huh? Cheri's basic argument is this: "I say you can never be too kind to children. They are children. Prisons are full of people who had strict harsh parents. Nice parents have nice children."

Putting aside her factually incorrect statement for the moment -- prisons are not full of people who had strict parents; they're full of people who come from broken homes and abusive environments -- Cheri is a mother who doesn't believe in tough love. She is, as she says, "nice" to her children -- which usually translates to being indulgent. Thus, she becomes defensive if someone says anything negative about this parenting style.

Bradley, a retired pastor and author of several other parenting books in addition to Born Liberal, Raised Right, writes this about defensive parenting: "Indulgent parents are highly resistant against any interference that there is something wrong with their parenting or their children. All they know is that they love their children and want good for them -- and it seems that's all they want to know.

Indulgent parents are hyper-defensive and lack objectivity. In [their] eyes, the child is always innocent or misunderstood -- and those who suggest otherwise are the enemy. These parents don't want to be told they need to change. And they definitely don't want to hear they're responsible for the moral struggles of the country.

Yet if we are to see any real turnaround, the next generation of parents must change how they rear their children."

Personally, I am very sympathetic to parents who struggle with discipline. I happen to believe society is more to blame than individual parents, for most people are followers and will do what society says is the "thing to do." And the "thing to do" today is to be soft on discipline out of fear of offending children's psyches and crushing their self-esteem. So that's what most people do.

What's really unfortunate about all this is that those who speak up about the problems of modern parenting are often assumed to be arrogant, as if they believe they're perfect parents. This is a shame, for this is not at all what separates them. What makes this group different from the silent group is not that they believe they're perfect parents or have perfect children -- there is no such thing! -- but that they're willing to look in the mirror when their kids behave inappropriately and ask themselves, What did I do wrong -- and how can I do better? And they believe if all parents did this, society would be much better off.

TOMORROW: Defensive Parenting, Part 2: Are You a Meanie?

My Beautiful Daughter Turns 10 Today

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY DARLING EMMA! Name-calling, put-downs, shouting, negative looks or gestures, ignoring opinions, or constant criticizing can all be legally labeled domestic violence…

VAWA also asserts that domestic violence is a crime, yet family courts often adjudicate domestic violence as a civil, rather than a criminal, matter. This means the accused is not innocent until proven guilty but is presumed guilty. Due process rights, such as trial by jury and the right of free counsel to poor defendants, are regularly denied, and false accusations are not covered by perjury law. VAWA provides funding for legal representation for accusers but not for defendants. The result was an interesting exchange among readers about corporal punishment. I'm not sure how my argument about being firm and loving simultaneously became viewed as a license to hit children, but it did.

At any rate, my post reminded me of something I read long ago that I was able to find on the Internet. I like the last paragraph in particular -- though modern parents would be appalled. Here it is:

Was your mom mean? I know mine was. We had the meanest mother in the whole world!

While other kids had candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast.

When others had a Pepsi and a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches.

And you can guess our mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had, too.

Mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You’d think we were convicts in a prison.

She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them.

She insisted that if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less.

We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws by making us work. We had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook, vacuum the floor, do laundry, and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do.

She always insisted on telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. By the time we were teenagers, she could read our minds. Then, life was really tough!

Mother wouldn’t let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them.

While everyone else could date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 16.

Because of our mother we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced. None of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing others’ property or ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault. We never got drunk, took up smoking, stayed out all night, or a million other things other kids did. Now that we have left home, we are all educated, honest adults.

We are doing our best to be mean parents just like Mom was. That must be what’s wrong with the world today. It just doesn’t have enough mean mothers anymore.

Co-Sleeping and Other Politically Correct Parenting Concepts

Political Emancipation, by Andre Harper

This is just to call your attention to this book, which sounds fascinating. I have not read it yet; the synopsis below is taken from Amazon.com.

The purpose of Political Emancipation is for the reader to explore the perspective and experience of a black man in the United States who is proud to be black and proud to be an American.

This is the story of a patriot who will gladly defend his freedom and constitution for the rights it protects. I am not here to offer the meaning of life or provide answers to all of the problems that ail our society or the black community. Through process of elimination, I can tell you that the government is not the answer. Somewhere the answer lies in the individual and a collective desire to preserve our Republic.

Perhaps if all Americans take advantage of the freedom the constitution affords, as I did, we can recognize that despite philosophical differences, the desire to maintain our society should remain the focus. Regardless of our differing opinions on gay marriage, abortion, or taxation, if we are invaded and enslaved by a hostile enemy, I can assure you these things will not matter.

Each person must realize there is a price for freedom. Each of us must learn our history, how it operates, the rights it affords us, and that we must remain eternally diligent because there will always be those who will threaten it.

Political Emancipation is a must read for anyone who wants a glimpse into the real African-American experience through the mind of a black man who has defied liberal indoctrination and is able to articulate and masterfully expose its fallacies.

Women's History Month: Conservatives Need Not Apply

Wendy Shalit and Dr. Miriam Grossman

For those of you who have kept up with my writing this week: I wanted to alert you to two women who are, unlike Jessica Valenti, doing wonders for young women: Wendy Shalit and Dr. Miriam Grossman. (And I'm sorry for being petty, but take a look at this face and then take a look at Valenti's face below: See a difference? Conservative women are happy women.)

Wendy Shalit hit the scene at the age of 22 with her politically incorrect book, A Return to Modesty. You can imagine the kind of flack she took: a young, modern woman arguing for modesty? How retro! How weird! How backward!

Yet modesty doesn't have to mean -- indeed it doesn't mean -- being prudish. Modesty means having some class. It also means appreciating the sexual energy that arises from not baring it all so quickly. If you watch old movies you'll see what I mean; there is so much sexual energy between men and women. Rather than ripping your clothes off after you meet someone, as they do today in the movies, the men and women in these movies are modest. And it's within this modesty that true sexual experience awaits. Shocking concept, I know...
Then there's fabulous Miriam Grossman, whom I met last year at a conference. Her talk was engrossing, and her reason for speaking out resulted from first-hand experience with college women (as a former campus psychologist) who were being duped by politically correct (read: feminist) ideology.

Now these are the folks whose material you need to be reading -- if not now, then when your children are teenagers.

From Yesterday's Article in Newsreal

Below is a comment exchange on Newsreal re my piece on Jessica Valenti. I haven't stepped foot on a college campus in 20 years! It was interesting, to say the least.

I waited for you after Ms. Valenti's lecture because I was so moved by your courage. As you saw, Ms. Valenti wants you to think casual sex is harmless. I can see that you know otherwise -- and you're more than 10 years younger than she is!

More importantly, that you sat in a lecture hall with several hundred people and spoke the unpopular speaks volumes about where you are headed in life. I'm sorry you were disappointed with Valenti's talk -- that you didn't realize what she stood for prior to going in. Now that you've sat through her leftist garbage, allow me to offer you something to support your views. It's an Amazon review of Ms. Valenti's book, The Purity Myth -- written by a 22-year old young woman named Amy. It should make you feel great about what you did this morning.

Congrats on being you.

Suzanne Venker

I am a young woman (I'm 22), and I have no hidden agenda. I think there is a big problem with casual sex. Biologically speaking, women are physically and emotionally more vulnerable to casual sex than men (but they don't hear about that in sex education or women's studies).
The feminists in the schools and universities do women a big disservice by trying to pursuade young women that to be liberated they have to embrace the casual sex ethic. They push to promote "safe sex", with no information on the emotional consequences.

But the studies show that most women regret casual sex and wish they had abstained or waited longer. Increased sexual permissiveness amongst young women has lead to a 'hook up' culture and a mental health crisis of rising STD's and emotional damage to young women who end up used and discarded--often many times.
Jessica's book "The Purity myth" is counterproductive in that she tries to claim there is no issue with young women sleeping around. I think what she means is that she likes casual sex, but many women hate it, and many end up deeply regreting casual sex, and resenting the men who take advantage of them. Teenage girls need to hear better instructions and standards about sex from those they look up to and trust (their parents and teachers).

A lot of men will do anything for casual sex, they invent a whole different personality. It can be devastating for a girl to realise that the man she gave her body to merely saw her as a warm place to masturbate with. When I was a teen, I agreed to casual sex with men, based on the information I got from my parents and teachers - I thought I was choosing the "liberated" path - but I ended up confused and hurt. Now I realise the truth is that casual sex is akin to being treated as an unpaid whore. We should be teeling teen girls to get men to take them out and buy them things before they go to bed with a man. The pro casual sex feminists are women's worst enemy. It's not liberating to get used as an unpaid whore. Casual sex is pro-men, not pro-women. When women give sex freely, men get what they want (sex) and are left to dictate the terms of the relationship, while the woman is left relatively powerless. People forget the ease at which men can seperate sex and love, and that men have a higher sex drive. And due to fertility concerns, many women want to begin their family earlier than men do. All these things make casual sex harmful to women, at least impractical to most women out there.

In the end, it might be fashionable to say men and women are the same when it comes to sex, but real life has definitely taught me differently.

Any Article by Jane Gilvary (or Jenn Q. In his autobiographical book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Douglass explains that “from that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom.” That pathway was literacy. While a slave in Baltimore, Douglass became literate with the clandestine help of his white mistress and a few of his unwitting white boyhood companions.

It wasn’t easy by any means because as Douglass explains, “It is an almost unpardonable offense to teach slaves to read.” Douglass discovered that literacy equaled freedom and sought the precious skills of reading and writing with a dogged intent: “During this time, my copy-book was the board fence, brick wall, and pavement; my pen and ink was a lump of chalk. With these I learned mainly how to write.”

Of course, Douglass went on to become one of the most gifted orators in American history, as well as an equally talented writer, publishing his own anti-slavery paper The North Star and writing his critically acclaimed aforementioned autobiography. His skills and talents even caught the attention of President Lincoln to whom Douglass became a close advisor during the Civil War.

Douglass’ oratorical and writing skills were the gateway to his enormously successful campaign to guarantee voting rights and civil liberties for blacks in America. His 1867 “Appeal to Congress for Impartial Suffrage” published in The Atlantic is a rhetorical masterpiece, an inarguable and flawless petition to Congress for black equality in America.

So Douglass would probably be disturbed to learn that teacher colleges such as those at University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNC-W) and Penn State University have abandoned the time tested, proven methods for teaching literacy — such as insisting that all students master standard English — for the newer methods of Ebonics, hip-hop literacy, and black English. At UNC-W, education professor Maurice Martinez teaches his future educators in “Teacher, School and Society” what he terms “black English” and cites that “there are rules in black English, and there are rules in Standard English.” Fundamental to the professor’s course is that future educators become literate in black English.

Professor Martinez hopes to educate others on how to communicate with people who use slang in the everyday speech, claiming it as part of black cultural roots. But aren’t schools supposed to be empowering students by teaching standard english instead of encouraging a type of slang that perpetuates oppression and subjugation?

Penn State’s School of Graduate Professional Studies recently offered a workshop that boasts using “Hip-hop as a cultural centerpiece to develop a student’s ability to effectively read, write, speak, and listen.” I sure hope they didn’t use lyrics from an Eminem song. Remember when education included teachers’ undying efforts to rid our language of slang? Now they’re apparently encouraging it. Were Douglass still alive, he’d probably write an eloquent lament about the demise of the Queen’s English at the hands of Young Jeezy, Lil’ Wayne, and the Beastie Boys.

Black columnist Dr. Walter E. Williams, the John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics at George Mason University since 1980 rails against this kind of teaching in a recent syndicated column entitled “Black Opportunity Destruction.” He refutes the idea that black english or Ebonics are part of black cultural roots. Mr. Williams, a former resident of North Philly’s Richard Allen Housing Project during the 1940s and 50s (along with comedian Bill Cosby) says that during that time “no one spoke black English,” and that the difference between proper and improper speech “has nothing to do with cultural roots of black people” and everything to do with teachers being “politically correct and lazy.”

Ask other successful black Americans such as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, former Oklahoma Congressman J.C. Watts, Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele, or former Secretary of Education Rod Paige, and I’m sure they’d testify that a great part of their success in life was due to their ability to read, write, and speak well.

As a long-time English teacher I would concur with Professor Williams’ assertion that teachers who endorse any kind of slang in their classrooms, including hip-hop lyrics, do their students a great disservice and only sustain illiteracy. There’s an undercurrent to hip-hop slang and Ebonics that oppresses the people who use them to communicate — black or white.

Orators like Douglass went to great lengths to speak clearly and in a refined manner in order to have the greatest rhetorical appeal; hip-hop slang and the culture attached to it undoes all of that in a three minute song that glorifies violence, soft porn, gang life, objectification of women, and crime. It’s ironic that the hip-hop culture itself was so attracted to candidate Obama’s articulate and refined manner of speaking that its enthusiasts came out in record numbers to vote for him. Douglass hit the mark when he said that “A little learning, indeed, may be a dangerous thing, but the want of learning is a calamity to any people.” Especially the want of learning standard English.

Jane Gilvary is a red, white, and blue American from the City of Brotherly Love. But that’s not the sort of horrific oppression interrupting Wolf’s beauty rest.

The “next big issue” women need to address, says Wolf, is lack of sleep.

Her preoccupation with this pressing issue of our time began with this recent declaration by Huffington Post editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington and Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive:

If you ask us, the next feminist issue is sleep. And in order for women to get ahead in this country, we’re all going to have to lie down and take a nap.

The Huffington Post is basically Entertainment Weekly with more nip slips and less class, so Huffington’s qualifications for deciding the “next feminist issue” are questionable at best. But that doesn’t stop Huffington and Leive from suggesting that women need to “sleep our way to the top,” citing “workaholism” and “a host of temptations, from Letterman to the PTA to your e-mail inbox” as reasons women aren’t getting enough shut-eye.

Naomi Wolf agrees that might be true of mere plebs, but believes that Huffington and Leive are overlooking a major cause of sleep deprivation in women who share her upper class status: the dreaded gym-salon-retail complex.

Women “who are privileged enough theoretically to just turn out the light at 10pm” toil away at a third shift that comes after work and family, but before sleep. Wolf calls it the “perfection shift,” but allow me to translate: she’s talking about the spa shift.

This is the time spent each week on manicures, highlights, and waxing. And it isn’t to pamper ourselves or to make ourselves presentable, but to punish ourselves for daring to be successful. She writes:

What’s up with this? I observe this trend not with judgment but with compassion. I believe that successful women — the ones with the most privileged lives of all — often feel a gnawing existential guilt about their very abundance and power. Someone has to be punished. The ones they punish are themselves.

The guilt, it eats away at us until we engage in the age old self-flagellation ritual known as the paraffin pedicure.

Another way women punish themselves? Stylish clothes. We could be sleeping, but instead, we’re shopping. Oh, and don’t forget exercise. Hopping on the treadmill isn’t so much for fitness as it is to exceed the expectations of others. What’s worse, Wolf says looking after our health is taking time away from our partners and kids.

Wolf’s theory is not only stunningly absurd, it’s based on false assumptions. The notion that women are sleep-deprived has been thoroughly debunked by writer Laura Vanderkam. Citing a Bureau of Labor Statistics study, she explains:

Married moms who work full time and have kids ages 6-17, according to this chart, sleep 8.09 hours per night. As for women being more sleep deprived than men? Married fathers who work full-time and have school-aged children actually sleep slightly less than their female counter-parts, though they, too, clock a full 8.0 hours per night.

Naomi Wolf, Arianna Huffington, and Cindi Leive might not get enough sleep, but their personal experiences aren’t indicative of a larger trend.

These women aren’t victims of exhaustion and a society that expects too much. And they aren’t suffering under the self-imposed punishment of the “perfection shift.” Instead, they’re overwhelmed by their staggering array of choices about how to spend an abundance of leisure time and disposable income.

So many choices, so little time. Life must be rough when you’re the Housewives of Perpetual Victimhood County.

—–

Follow Jenn Q. But I'd just like to say in my defense that, as of this point in time, I do not travel a lot.
